SBA or Partners – Primary Business Funding Options

Over the last six months the economy has slipped in certain areas. We see consumers’ confidence down, much like in 2008 when AIG, Lehman and more led to a downturn. As a consultant in the healthcare sector to pension funds, these managers of many millions of dollars in investments echo similar thoughts. From the standpoint of completing business plans, although our Google rankings are much higher for many searches like “green business plans” as one example, we see fewer entrepreneurs and business owners Googling us to address their business plan needs in 2011 versus 2010. Why? Again, it goes to consumer confidence in their ability to raise capital for businesses and succeed in the current market place.



Throughout history, there has always been fluctuation in the markets and economy. This downturn has lasted longer than most, with certain impacts not yet fully felt, such as the real estate market. Nonetheless, the majority of businesses are recession proof, and even in a downturn in an area such as real estate, there are always opportunities. As an example, over the last few years, we have completed a couple of dozen business plans for real estate with different models and different requirements and have many clients that have been successful in raising capital to take advantage of the downturn.



Businesses need capital and without question capital is tight. To access funds, a custom business plan completed by a team of experts that is on the pulse of the current economic situation and funding opportunities is critically important. Typically when providing a free consult on a business plan we look at two primary options for funding: i) SBA or ii) equity investment through angels, private partners or sometimes venture capitalists. SBA does require a good credit rating - a minimum of 680 was quoted by a senior manager of an SBA program at a major bank this week - as well as some equity investment, typically 10-25% depending on various factors. In many cases even startups that have already invested into their business may qualify.



Finding private investors still requires a very similar and high quality business plan, and that is a custom basis, not the negatives in templates I have blogged about often, a plan that is suitable for SBA loans or equity investment. We receive many inquiries about obtaining VC funds, an area in which our SVP of Finance and his team is intimately familiar, including our own custom database of over 750 VC and equity investment companies. However, unless the client has a new breakthrough technology for first phase funding or maybe assured contracts for major sales, or it must have substantial trended sales and investment in the business for VC firms to want to invest in second stage funding. Startups are not the realm of a VC firm unless a technology with little to no competition is involved, but many plans are the types of plans that very often can attract angel or private investor monies.



There are lots of so-called business plan consultants and plenty of people that can write. But the old saying “garbage in, garbage out” applies to those consultants and their clients all too often, let alone flawed templates that are so easy for entrepreneurs to Google and mistakenly use. We are different as we provide in-depth consulting to a custom business plan to suit many funding options and in many cases we get involved in obtaining that funding.

CT Scan Risky For Kids

The number of Americans who use CT (computed tomography) scans has surged in the last decade reaching 62 million in 2007 to check for appendicitis. Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix caused by a blockage.

The new study shows that health departments across America, the percentage of adult patients with appendicitis who were diagnosed using CT scans increased from just 6 percent in 1996, to 69 percent in 2006.

Dr. Daniel Tsze, the study's lead researcher, said he could not say whether the figures last one is "too high" because CT is the most accurate test for appendicitis.

"That's probably one of the main reasons for the increased use of CT scans, although there is actually no danger of radiation," said Tsze.

CT is an alternative to ultrasound, with no radiation. It is not as accurate as CT, but try first ultrasound can limit the number of patients who end up in the CT scanner.

Tsze advise patients and parents to ask questions if the doctor wants to do a CT scan to check for abdominal pain, is it really necessary or whether there are alternatives.

"Because the use of CT scans in children, to be quite dangerous due to radiation exposure their biggest lifetime and this could bring to some cancer risk," said Tsze.

Tips to avoid dry lips

Last Tuesday marked the last day of my Internship with Tatty Devine. I've been there part time for the last six week and I've thoroughly enjoyed it. A big part of me wanted to stay longer, however I'm in the process of moving and I'm also covering for my Manager while she's on holiday (which resulted in 10 days straight last week!) so to be honest it was getting a bit stressful and impractical. 

If I'm honest, I didn't really learn a lot as such, it really is just basic construction (which doing all day, non stop, is pretty tiring) but it was really exciting to work on the new Autumn/ Winter collection and to put together samples for the coming Spring/Summer collection. The Tatty Devine team are lovely, they always provided a pretty stella Vegetarian lunch (I've not heard of an internship providing lunch, let alone one I could eat) and there was some incredible cakes to be had.

I baked some peanut butter and chocolate cookies to take in. I had rather grander plans for an epic carrot cake, but was informed rather late in the day that it was my boyfriend's Mum's birthday.... So we were going for dinner which resulted in all thoughts of a carrot cake being lost. However dinner was really good, and we had the loveliest news of an engagement in the family!

As a thank you they make all interns their own name necklace. I'm not massively taken by my own name, so true to crazy cat lady form, I opted for my two favourite people cats, Rufus and Indie. Rufus and Indie are undoubtedly tortoise shell, anchor kind of cats and I can't wait to show them. True to cat form, they will probably try to maul it.

(Said little people in question. I haven't taken any new photos of Rufus and Indie in such a long time - I need to rectify this soon.)

And as an extra gift, I was given the rather wonderful wooden moustache necklace which I like to wear with pride and a peter pan collar.

As I'm still unable to share with you the pieces I actually worked on, I thought I would show you a few of my favourites from current and past collections:

The dinosaur skeleton necklace is without doubt, my ultimate in Tatty Devine and if they ever decided to produce it in wood, I would probably have to sell all my possessions to own it.

In other news, I've had the worst customer service know to man from a small online shop. It's really upset me on many levels, a month after ordering I still haven't received the item, a refund, or a single word from the shop. I'm chasing it up via paypal, but it's just so disappointing, I've always had amazing service from small online shops and owning one myself, I just can't quite believe the service, or lack there of. I won't bore you with the details like poorSophie but I can't but help feel it makes us all look bad when a small shop behaves like that. Maybe I've just been really unfortunate.

As I mentioned earlier I'm also in the process of moving, if you follow me on Twitter you will have seen the absurd photos of the chaos in our flat. The removals men came this morning (at 8am) so the great clean will commence this evening.

The PAL version of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue will feature the red Ferrari Formula 1 car (a Scuderia Ferrari F2007) that Kimi Raikkononen drove to world championship victory last year. You can only get the car in the Ferrari dealership in the game for two million game credits. You’ll be driving it with 70 other cars on six tracks (High Speed Ring, Daytona, Fuji Speedway, Eiger Nordwand from Gran Turismo HD Concept, Suzuka Circuit and a section of central London), when Gran Turismo 5: Prologue will be released in Australia on March 27th, Europe on March 28th and later in the U.S. on April 17th.
